Avalanche Ammo

For a while there I felt that instrumental guitar music was reaching serious saturation point here. While that might still be the case to an extent, Avalanche Ammo - the solo project of Kildare's Ant Boland - has that extra something about it. Nialler9 said it sounds like 'The Redneck Manifesto on crack', which is a pretty useful description. The material Boland's released so far tends towards the heavier end of the spectrum: there's shades of BATS or the more frenetic Adebisi Shank songs. The debut EP Animals was well-received and there's now two new tracks on Soundcloud, 'Trojan Horse' and 'Ambulance Chaser'. The former could be the heaviest thing he's done yet, but still retains that knack for winding, intricate riffs and deceptive left-turns.

These tunes and the Animals EP are free to download..

Avalanche Ammo plays in Whelan's tonight (June 3rd) along with the excellent We Are Losers and Alarmist. Alarmist are a band I keep meaning to listen to but haven't really got around to it yet. But they're popular elsewhere, so all in all a great line-up.

Hefty Horse presents: Sacred Animals/We Are Losers/The Holy Roman Army

This takes place upstairs in Whelan's next Tuesday, January 11th, with three bands/acts who released fantastic EPs last year, and who should all be releasing some more quality stuff in the year ahead. Sacred Animals' Welcome Home was widely acclaimed in the end-of-year lists and summaries, with 'Chosen Seed' already having the air of a classic about it

We Are Losers, a solo project by Gavin Elsted of Super Extra Bonus Party (who's also behind Adultrock and the Adebisi Shank/Jay Z mash-up), released an EP that was two parts lo-fi Wavves-esque fun and one part dreamy shoegaze amazingness ('Windbreaker'):

...while Carlow-based duo The Holy Roman Army were responsible for the Desecrations EP, a collection of covers that brought new life to classics by Rollerskate Skinny and the Pixies. They'll be getting back to releasing their own self-penned material this year, with a follow-up to debut album How The Light Gets In due.

Incidentally, there's also a Holy Roman Army remix of a Sacred Animals tune in the pipeline for the not-too-distant future.

Three great acts then, fiver in, 8pm kick-off.

Enemies, Cast of Cheers and more for Roisin Dubh NYE line-up

A savage line-up of bands to ring in the new year in Galway's Roisin Dubh: The Cast of Cheers and Enemies are both phenomenal live bands, and they're joined by fuzz-poppers We Are Losers (the project of Super Extra Bonus Party's Gavin Elsted), cyber-synth wizards Le Galaxie and local heroes Lost Chord.
