Stream: OOAL split 7" - C!ties + Guilty Optics

Out On A Limb Records have already released one excellent split 7" this year with the Windings/Vertigo Smyth double-header (http://tinyurl.com/36esk3x). The follow-up couldn't be more of a contrast stylistically. On one side there's the blistering 'White Teeth' by Dubliners Guilty Optics: it's very much in the same ballpark as album-of-the-year contenders Jogging, heavy and hardcore-influenced.

The other side features the equally impressive 'Krakatoa' by Ennis-based band C!ties, an instrumental tour-de-force that shifts deftly from sludgy post-rock to lean, laser-precision riffing

Windings/Vertigo Smyth split 7"

I've slept on this one too long. Out On a Limb Records recently released a split 7" featuring the talents of Windings (featuring former Giveamanakick frontman Steve Ryan) and Co. Clare's Vertigo Smyth. It's a limited edition 7" available to buy at a series of upcoming gigs.

The tracks contributed are Windings' 'Old Like J' and Smyth's 'The Armada Song', both sharing a mellow, folky vibe. 'Old Like J' I recognise as the song that's stood out above all others any time I've seen Windings live: it's a gentle, wistful number with a gorgeous, chiming guitar line and a nicely understated climax. "All I want is to grow old like J/From a teenage riot to a silvery grave" - referencing J Mascis and Sonic Youth? Nice touch. Fantastic tune. Vertigo Smyth's contribution is impressive too, a reflective, elegant folk tune with atmospheric strings and cooing backing vocals.

The songs are available to stream from Windings' Bandcamp and Smyth's Myspace - http://www.myspace.com/vertigosmyth

The release will be available (with download codes) at the upcoming Windings/Vertigo Smyth shows:

AUG 6 - Widow's Bar, Cavan
AUG 12 - Whelan's (upstairs)
AUG 19 - The Hub, Ennis

Windings will also be performing at Thursday night's Strange Brew Summer Shindig in the Roisin Dubh, Galway, part of a stonking line-up that includes The Cast of Cheers, Adebisi Shank, Jogging, Lost Chord, Blasterbra and Disconnect 4. That whole affair kicks off a bit after 7, tickets available from their website.

Windings' album will be released in October. From the OOAL website:

"The songs on the new album explode around your ears like a thousand packages of fizzy sherber’ dip back your throat, coaxing you with sweet lullabies, before thrashing you against the sound barrier, bringing you from pure cosy pop to dirty almost-metal in a delicious 10 track nosebag of sound."

Having seen them live, I don't doubt it.

The good folks over at Out On A Limb Records have just launched a new website at http://www.outonalimbrecords.com/. In the coming weeks they'll be adding nifty features including a shop. Also, anyone who subscribes to the mailing list on the website over the weekend will be entered into a draw for a free goodiebag.

In other Out On A Limb news, Windings will release debut single 'Brain Fluid', on April 16th, and an album will follow in the fall. Windings will be touring the country in late April as well as playing support to Ted Leo on May 8th in Whelan's.
